How I teach

Every lesson works back from the mark scheme

Most students I meet understand more than their grades show. They lose marks on method: a missing line of working, the wrong command word, a diagram read the wrong way. Lessons are built to win those marks back.

The three stages

What happens, in order

1

Find the gaps (free session)

A 30-minute introductory session on Zoom. Your child works through a short set of exam questions with me, and I see exactly where the marks are going: a topic, a type of question, or a habit like skipping working. You get a plain summary afterwards and we agree a target grade. No payment until you decide to continue.

2

Fix the method

Each lesson takes one topic and teaches the steps the mark scheme pays for, then practises them on exam-style questions. We mark together, one mark at a time, so your child learns to see a question the way an examiner does. Homework is a short set of questions from the same topic, marked before the next lesson.

3

Timed papers

Once the topics are secure we move to full papers under exam timing. I mark them the way an examiner would and we go through every lost mark. By exam season the papers are routine, and the exam feels like one more of them.

What a lesson looks like

One hour, one topic

First 10 minutes

Warm-up from last time

Three or four quick questions on the previous lesson's topic. If one is shaky, we fix it before moving on.

Middle 40 minutes

Teach, then practise

I explain the method with a worked example, then your child does exam questions while I watch for the step that goes wrong. We reveal the mark scheme mark by mark.

Last 10 minutes

Recap and set homework

We write down the method in your child's own words. Homework is 20 to 30 minutes from the same topic.

For parents

How you stay in the loop

A short note after every lesson

A WhatsApp message with what we covered, what the homework is, and one thing to watch for. It takes a minute to read.

Marks you can see

Every practice paper comes back with the score and the marks lost by type, so you can see progress rather than take my word for it.

Taught to your child's exam board

AQA, Edexcel, OCR, IGCSE and IB all award marks slightly differently. We practise with questions written for the board your child actually sits.

Online, on Zoom

Camera on, shared whiteboard, and the lesson recording is available if your child wants to watch a method back.
