Waves (stationary waves, interference, diffraction, refraction)

Answer on paper first, then reveal the mark scheme one mark at a time.

A progressive wave has a frequency of 50 Hz and a wavelength of 0.60 m.

(a) Calculate the phase difference, in radians, between two points on the wave that are 0.15 m apart along the direction of travel. [2]

(b) Calculate the speed of the wave. [1]

2Core3 marks

(a) State what is meant by a plane-polarised wave. [1]

(b) Explain why sound waves cannot be polarised. [1]

(c) Give one practical application of polarisation. [1]

A string is stretched between a vibration generator and a pulley. The vibrating length of the string is 0.80 m and the mass per unit length is $1.2\times10^{-3}$ kg m$^{-1}$. A mass of 0.50 kg hangs from the end of the string.

(a) Calculate the frequency of the first harmonic. [2]

(b) The frequency is increased until the third harmonic is seen. State this frequency and the number of nodes on the string, including both ends. [2]

(c) Explain how a stationary wave forms on the string. [2]

4Standard5 marks

A student carries out a Young's double-slit experiment. Laser light passes through two slits 0.40 mm apart. The fringes are observed on a screen 2.5 m from the slits. The student measures the distance across 10 fringe spacings as 34 mm.

(a) Calculate the wavelength of the light. [3]

(b) Explain why the student measures across 10 fringe spacings rather than one. [1]

(c) State one safety precaution when using a laser. [1]

5Standard5 marks

Light of wavelength 589 nm is incident normally on a diffraction grating with 300 lines per mm.

(a) Calculate the angle of the first-order maximum. [3]

(b) Determine the highest order maximum that can be observed. [2]

6Hard7 marks

A step-index optical fibre has a core of refractive index 1.52 and a cladding of refractive index 1.48.

(a) Calculate the critical angle at the core–cladding boundary. [2]

(b) Calculate the speed of light in the core. [1]

(c) Give two reasons why the fibre has a cladding. [2]

(d) Explain how modal dispersion arises and why using a narrower core reduces it. [2]

7Stretch5 marks

A ray of monochromatic light is incident on one face of an equilateral glass prism at point X, as shown. The angle of incidence at X is 30°. The refractive index of the glass is 1.50.

Determine whether the ray leaves the prism at the second face (point Y). If it does, calculate the angle between the emerging ray and the normal at Y. [5]
